The motor was built in The Netherlands in the year 2008.
It was specifically designed as a submarine carrier with moon pool between the hulls, mainly for liaing/deploying and transpor=ng the manned research submersible LULA1000 (1000m depth, crew of 3).
The vessel has been used as a bathymetric survey vessel and support vessel for manned submersible missions for the past 12 years, as well as a pladorm for the necessary maintenance work on the sub.
It is equipped with underwater naviga=on and communica=on systems for the underwater vehicle, sidescan equipment with magnetometer and a winch with 2,200m of cable, a ELAC mul=beam sonar system for 3,000m of depth for bathymetric surveys and a workshop with lathe, milling machine, welding
equipment, stock of spare parts, etc.
It is sailing under Portuguese flag and registered as a yacht, facilitating mooring in a normal marina, as well as crew related questions. Actually she is operating as a pleasure craft with maritimetouristic licensing, which allows certain commercial activities, such as charter/rental and scientifictouristic
activities.
During the past 12 years, it has been successfully used for the purposes that it was designed for.
Numerous projects have been carried out in the field of oceanography and deepsea biology, habitat mapping, archaeological research, and wildlife and ocean filming for groundbreaking nature documentaries, in the Northeast Atlantic.
Bathymetric surveys
Bathymetrical and bottom characterization surveys using the multibeam and sidescan sonar are carried out prior to dives in order to complete the data and help planning the diving missions.
The availability of this technology on board makes it a compact and complete survey vessel.
Archaeological work/wreck location:
It can also easily be used as a vessel for wreck search and recovery. The precision sidescan equipment allows for clean high res acoustic imagery up to 900m of depth. The powerful hydraulic winch is controlled with a joystick from the steering station at the bridge and has a controlling backup and also an electrical motor backup in case of winch failure.
The hydraulic winch allows high coiling speeds for fast action. It also provides for an electric motor back-up system in case the hydraulic system should fail. The Klein3000 sidescan sonar provides high quality pictures.
This system has successfully been used within an archaeological project for the Government of the Azores.
Several old ship wreck sites were discovered at Terceira island during this project. The magnetometer, connected to the sidescan fish, delivers accurate readings of magnetic anomalies.
ROV operation:
It is also an ideal tool for ROV operations. The huge workspace can host an additional cable winch and a deep-going work class ROV with all its accessories. The ROV can be operated through the moon pool and the integrated crane structure. The I-crossbeams above the moon pool are designed and tested for safe liaing of loads up to 10 tons. The practical large desk at the comfortable bridge is the best place for the control monitors and piloting station for the ROV.
The (red) I-crossbeams were designed to support the LULA submersible during rest and transport. The beams can also be used as a base for a massive cable winch, for example for liaing heavy equipment from greater depth right through the moon pool into the protected work area. Ideal possibilities and conditions for salvage operations also in rough sea conditions.
Scuba diving:
Scuba diver operations are an easy task with this catamaran and have been performed with success over 10 years. The closed area around the
moon pool ensures privacy during operations, for example during wreck diving activities. With the huge space around the moon pool, there are virtually no space limitations. Given the high stability of a catamaran, even aquariums or other experiments can be mounted for groups of scientists or scientifically interested divers.
